Rediscovering Adventure Through Food and Healing This Summer.

As summer unfolds, I find myself looking back at the adventures I've had and the ones I've missed this year. My summers usually burst with camping trips, hiking excursions, and other outdoor activities that fuel my spirit. However, this summer has taken a different turn. While I haven't embarked on as many camping trips as I typically would, I've discovered joy in new activities that have enriched my life in unexpected ways.

This season, I enjoyed a memorable trip to Montreal, explored the picturesque wine country of Prince Edward County, and had delightful dinner dates around the city. Alongside these adventures, I've been focusing on my mental health, taking steps to manage my anxiety and panic attacks. I want to share my journey, reminding you that even when life alters its course, adventures still await, and healing can be embraced.

A Trip to Montreal: Culture and Connection

Montreal was a whirlwind of culture, food, and adventure. I strolled through the cobblestone streets of Old Montreal, soaking in rich history and lively energy. The architecture was stunning, showcasing a blend of old-world beauty and modern design. I indulged in local delicacies like poutine, which consists of fries topped with cheese curds and gravy, and fresh bagels from St-Viateur. Each dish was a delicious reminder of the city’s culinary talent.

A highlight of my trip was visiting the Montreal Jazz Festival, where I experienced music featuring both classic and contemporary artists. I found myself captivated by the music, which served as a powerful reminder of the importance of creativity and expression, especially while focusing on my mental health.

While I may have missed my usual camping trips, this urban excursion reminded me that adventure can take many forms. Sometimes, it means immersing yourself in a new environment and embracing the opportunities it brings. Statistics show that cultural experiences can boost your well-being. For instance, a study by the Arts Council England found that attending cultural events boosts life satisfaction among participants, highlighting the power of creativity.

Touring Wine Country in Prince Edward County

After Montreal, I headed to Prince Edward County, an emerging destination celebrated for its scenic views and superb wineries. Touring the vineyards was delightful, and I relished the chance to taste top-quality wines produced in the region. For example, I discovered a wonderful Pinot Noir that had received a Silver medal at the 2022 National Wine Awards.

The natural beauty of the countryside took my breath away, with rolling hills and expansive grapevines stretching as far as the eye could see. I enjoyed rejuvenating walks through the vineyards, allowing the peacefulness of the scenery to wash over me. It was the perfect escape, revealing that solace can be found in nature, even without a traditional camping experience.

During my stay in the county, I took the time to connect with my sister. Rebuilding my relationship with family has been very important to me. Spending time with my nieces and nephews always holds a special place in my heart.

Dinner Dates in the City

Back home, I continued my summer adventures with dinner dates at different places around the city. Maipai, a beloved spot known for its vibrant atmosphere and delicious pizza has been a spot I have been wanting to get to and finally have! The deep dish Detroit style pizza, paired with the tiki vibes makes this place very unique and a spot everyone should check out.

Sharing meals with friends and family has always been a source of happiness for me. These dinner outings became special moments to reconnect and celebrate life’s simple joys. We laughed, swapped stories, and savoured each other’s company, creating unforgettable memories. Having friends that you can call up at anytime, and sit and enjoy a meal with is so healing for the soul.

Focusing on Mental Health

This summer has been a time for reflection and healing. I have been addressing my mental health and have recently started taking Lexapro to help manage my panic attacks. This journey has taught me that it is perfectly alright to seek help and prioritize well-being.

Reassessing my fitness routine has allowed me to focus on what is truly important—my mental health and the joys of life. I've realized that healing is not a straight path. It is essential to be kind to myself during this process.

Engaging in activities that fulfill me, such as cooking and exploring new places, has proven to be very therapeutic. Even when life seems overwhelming, there are still nuggets of joy waiting to be discovered.

From wandering the streets of Montreal to savoring exquisite wines in Prince Edward County and enjoying dinner outings in Hamilton, I have learned that adventure comes in many forms.
