There are some places you visit once and enjoy, and then there are places that become part of who you are. For me, Pog Lake Campground in Algonquin Provincial Park is one of those places.
Every time I drive through the gates of Algonquin, I feel a sense of calm wash over me. The towering pines, the winding roads, the familiar smell of the forest—it all feels like coming home. While I've camped in many beautiful parks across Ontario over the years, there is something about Algonquin that continues to pull me back.
This year's trip to Pog Lake reminded me exactly why.
Nestled in the heart of Algonquin Provincial Park, Pog Lake offers the perfect balance of convenience and wilderness. The campground is family-friendly, close to hiking trails, and provides easy access to the water, making it an ideal destination for campers of all experience levels. But for me, the appeal goes far beyond the amenities.

Algonquin holds some of my earliest camping memories. Long before I started Fitness Adventures with Liz, before campground reviews and blog posts became a regular part of my life, Algonquin was where I learned to appreciate the outdoors. It was where I discovered that some of life's best moments happen around a campfire, on a quiet morning paddle, or during a walk through the woods.
Returning to Pog Lake feels like reconnecting with an old friend.
One of my favorite parts of the trip was simply slowing down. In a world that constantly encourages us to do more, Algonquin reminds you to do less. Morning coffee tastes better when enjoyed at a picnic table overlooking the lake. Afternoon walks feel more meaningful when there's no destination beyond enjoying the scenery. Even the evenings seem to move at a different pace as the sun sets behind the forest and the sounds of nature take over.

Of course, no trip to Algonquin would be complete without exploring some of the park's incredible trails. Whether you're tackling a longer hike or enjoying one of the shorter interpretive trails, there is beauty around every corner. The landscape is uniquely Canadian—rocky ridges, sparkling lakes, dense forests, and wildlife that remind you just how wild and untouched this place still feels.
One thing I noticed during this visit was how much my relationship with camping has evolved over the years. When I first started camping, it was all about the adventure. Now, while I still love exploring new places, I also appreciate what camping does for my mental and physical well-being. It's a chance to disconnect from screens, reconnect with nature, and recharge in a way that no vacation resort ever could.
As I sat by the campfire one evening, watching the flames dance beneath a sky full of stars, I couldn't help but reflect on how far this blog has come. What started as a passion project has grown into a space where I can share my adventures, my fitness journey, and my love for the outdoors. Parks like Pog Lake have played a huge role in that journey, inspiring countless stories and reminding me why I started in the first place.
That's why Algonquin will always hold a special place in my heart.

It's not just the breathtaking scenery or the endless opportunities for adventure. It's the memories. The traditions. The feeling of familiarity every time I return. It's a place that has been there through different seasons of my life, offering the same sense of peace and wonder each time.
As we packed up camp and prepared for the drive home, I found myself already looking forward to the next visit. Because some places aren't just destinations—they become part of your story.
And for me, Pog Lake will always be one of them.
