Winter Car Camping at Arrowhead Provincial Park

Winter camping isn’t just for the extreme adventurers with backcountry gear and four-season tents. If you’ve ever dreamed of experiencing the magic of a snow-covered forest but aren’t quite ready to sleep in a tent at -20°C, car camping is a perfect way to bridge the gap. This past weekend,I packed up my dad's GMC Acadia, with Rosie and headed to Arrowhead Provincial Park for an unforgettable cold-weather adventure.

Why Arrowhead?

Situated in Muskoka, Ontario, just 2 hours away from my home, Arrowhead Provincial Park transforms into a winter paradise with its groomed ski trails, renowned ice skating trail, and breathtaking snow-covered scenery. It ranks among the top parks for winter camping due to its heated comfort stations, snowshoe trails, and diverse winter activities. I have visited Arrowhead numerous times for camping, hiking, and even winter skating, so I am very familiar with the area.

Prepping for a Winter Car Camping Trip

Car camping in winter requires some extra planning. Here’s what I packed:

Setting Up Camp in the Acadia

The GMC Acadia turned out to be an ideal winter camping vehicle, with the seats folded down flat, I created a spacious area to set up my sleeping pad and sleeping bag, transforming the vehicle into a cozy haven against the cold. To combat the frigid temperatures outside, I took the extra step of insulating the windows with reflective sunshades. These not only helped to retain warmth inside the vehicle but also provided a barrier against the biting winter winds, creating a snug atmosphere that was inviting and comfortable. To enhance the ambiance further, I added battery-powered fairy lights, casting a gentle glow that created a warm and cozy atmosphere. Rosie, my loyal companion, curled up in her bed situated next to the small heater, enjoying the warmth radiating from it while I busied myself with preparing the fire.

The firepit outside was unfortunately filled with snow, presenting an obstacle that I was prepared for. I was grateful I had packed a little snow shovel, which proved invaluable in clearing away the snow to access the fire pit. After clearing the area, I retrieved a few fire logs I had brought along, and with some effort, I managed to get the fire going, its crackling flames providing both warmth and light against the dark, cold backdrop of the winter night. Once the fire was roaring, I settled into my heated Kuma chair with my blanket wrapped around me, allowing myself to truly relax and enjoy the fresh, crisp air that filled my lungs.

The contrast of the chill outside and the warmth from the fire was invigorating. My life has been a little crazy these last few months, filled with challenges that have left me feeling overwhelmed. Seasonal depression hit me particularly hard this year, manifesting in days where I found it physically difficult to get out of bed, weighed down by a sense of lethargy and gloom. This camping trip, despite the biting cold of -16 degrees outside, felt absolutely necessary for my mental health and well-being. Sitting by the fire, wrapped in my blanket, I felt an overwhelming sense of comfort and belonging. Arrowhead holds such a special place in my heart; it was the very first Ontario Park I ever visited with Rosie, and the memories we created there are etched into my mind. Knowing that this was the location for our first winter camping adventure filled me with joy and nostalgia. The beauty of the snow-covered landscape surrounding us, coupled with the warmth of the fire and the companionship of my furry friend, made everything feel right in the world, if only for a moment. This trip was not just an escape from reality; it was a necessary retreat that reminded me of the healing power of nature and the importance of taking time for oneself amidst the chaos of life.

A Day of Winter Adventures

My morning started with a hot cup of coffee. For this trip, I was able to test out Coastal Coffee's The Traveller. I have to say they were amazing (this is not sponsored and I bought the coffee myself). It was so nice to have a hot cup of pour-over coffee instead of instant. Don't get me wrong, I still love a good cup of Nescafe, but these little pouches were great!

As I sipped my coffee, I couldn't help but feel a sense of pride for making it through the night. The challenges I faced were tough, but I persevered, and that accomplishment filled me with a sense of achievement. It was a reminder that I am capable of overcoming obstacles, no matter how daunting they may seem.

After coffee, Rosie and I took a short hike along the Stubb’s Falls Trail. The frozen waterfall was breathtaking, and the fresh snow made the trail feel like a true winter escape. In the afternoon, I laced up my skates for Arrowhead’s famous Ice Skating Trail—an absolute must-do if you visit in winter! Gliding through the forest on a 1.3 km loop of natural ice is an experience like no other.

After the skate, Rosie and I returned to the Acadia, cranked up the heater, and enjoyed a warm meal while watching the snowfall through the windows. The quietness of the park at was incredible, and despite the cold outside, we were snug and comfortable in our setup we almost didn't want to come home.

Winter camping at Arrowhead Provincial Park was an adventure I won’t forget. It was a perfect mix of comfort and challenge—allowing me to experience the beauty of winter camping without needing hardcore mountaineering skills. If you’re looking for a way to enjoy the snowy season without braving a tent, car camping is an excellent option. As most of you know who follow me on social media, I have taken a break from Instagram for lent. Come over and check me out on TikTok. I don't post as often on there, but I do share my experiences. I am not sure where my next adventure will be, but I can assure you it will be soon! The sun is setting after 7pm and the snow is melting so camping season is just around the corner! If there is anywhere you would recommend I visit send me a message!
